What Is a VIN Number?

A Vehicle Identification Number is a fixed 17-character code every manufacturer stamps onto a vehicle at the factory. It's not random — three sections of it each encode something specific:

Positions 1–3: manufacturer & country of origin
VDSVDS
Positions 4–9: model, body style, engine, check digit
VISVISVIS
Positions 10–17: model year, assembly plant, serial number

Where to Find Your VIN

No VIN handy? It's stamped or printed in a few standard spots on every vehicle — here are the three easiest to check:

    Engine bay — open the hood; it's stamped on the front of the engine block or the firewall.

    Dashboard — visible through the windshield from outside, at the base of the driver's side corner.
  3. 3
    Driver's door jamb — on a sticker where the door latches when closed, usually alongside tire and paint codes.

You'll also find it printed on the vehicle's title, registration, and insurance card.

What a VIN Decode Actually Tells You

Every vehicle's 17-character Vehicle Identification Number encodes real factory data: the manufacturer, model, model year, body style, engine, and the plant where it was built. Our decoders read that structure using the free public NHTSA vPIC database — the same reference data used by insurers, DMVs, and dealers across the United States, and by used-car shoppers as far as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia — and turn it into a plain-English summary in seconds.

This is not a vehicle history report. It won't tell you about accidents, title status, or prior owners — for that you'll want a dedicated history report service. What it will tell you, independently of what any seller or listing claims, is exactly what the vehicle was built as.

Does this include factory options and packages?

No — factory-installed options and packages require manufacturer build-sheet data, which isn't part of the public NHTSA database. This tool covers model, year, engine, body style, and plant of manufacture.

Can I decode a motorcycle, RV, or other vehicle type?

Why I Built This

I was trying to check a VIN on a used BMW and every "free" decoder I found either wanted a credit card first or handed back junk data that didn't match the car. So I built this instead — it reads straight from NHTSA's own public records, no account, no catch, and I've kept it that way as I've added more brands.
